Competition!
There will be a "bookshelve and seating" competition! The team that has the best bookshelve and seating design, will win a prize! (the "seating" project will give you a chance to rethink the design of a typical chair or bench, for the community to utilize!)
Please note that all attendees are highly encourage to bring their own writing utensils; pens, pencils and/or markers. White paper and other handouts will be provided on site. A personal sketch book is more than welcome.
On Saturday March 13th, all attendees will have the opportunity to choose from four workshops+lectures provided at our school. They will all be from 02:15PM-03:15PM and will consist of NCARB, USGBC, Jeld-Wen, a Rhino workshop and a workshop on Sketching Method for Design. Jeff Chapman is a current employee at Kirksey and is the former EGB Committee Chairperson. His lecture, Responsible Architecture, will discuss the role of sustainable design, LEED and responsible design in the design process by highlighting a few examples from around the city and explaining how architects can become more sophisticated in their design philosophy. There is a constant discussion regarding "sustainable design" but not much has been said about what that really means to a particular project or a particular client. The LEED rating system is one very important tool that provides architects with a reputable source of information concerning environmentally friendly design methods.
Michael Dunning from Jeld-Wen will talk about the current discussions on how windows and doors fit in a Green-built world.
Brian Yeoman is a City Director of the Clinton Climate Initiative in Houston, Texas, since April 2007. He will present Houston as a case study city for sustainability efforts. What makes Houston encouraging? He will discuss various components of sustainability, including recycling, energy efficiency, green building, alternative energy sources, transportation, and indoor air quality.
Jason Logan, a current third and fourth year studio Professor at the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture, has a Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Architecture from University of Houston. The workshop (Introduction to Environmental Parametrics) will be an introduction to parametric modeling, and will showcase the potentials of the technology with regard to environmental inputs. Students will need to have a familiarity with the nurbs modeling software Rhino, but students are not required to have experience with the plug-in Grasshopper.
Jack Hanna will do a workshop on Sketching Method for Design where he will be presenting you with interesting ways to set up quick sketching of buildings, their massing, detailing and play of sunlight/shadow to develop 3D form. You will look at the perspective process from aerial, pedestrian eye level and interior views
Lastly we are offering attendees the opportunity to do a Design Charrette from 03:30PM-06:00PM with Susan Rogers: an Assistant Professor at the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and the Director for the Community Design Resource Center (CDRC). Attendees will have the chance to work on a community based project located in Houston, in which students get to collaborate with their assigned groups, engage in crucial discussions while sketching and making important design decisions. Project information will be distributed on site and the winning group will be announced at the end of the charrette. Look forward to a prize, so bring your thinking hats!
